How would you briefly describe your current role and primary areas of expertise?
I am a Professor and research scientist working at the intersection of cognition and technology. I have a particular interest in inclusive design (such as for accessibility) and for human-centred design, where we humans need to be at the centre of all technological design so that it serves our social, behavioural, biological, and cognitive needs.
What are one or two key experiences or areas of research/practice that have shaped your work?
My research collaborations with people with visual impairments has revealed the importance of inclusivity, and how technology can help break those barriers down if designed well. Advances in machine learning, computer vision, and wearable technology can provide equitable opportunities for everyone to be more connected and empowered, but only if we design them that way.
What interests you most about the topic of connection in the workplace (or Connection Intelligence more broadly)?
Whenever someone tells me what they like most about a place they worked, it is always about the connections to other people that they mention first, rather than the office, the projects, or the compensation. My interest in connection is both scientific and selfishly personal, as this is something that is clearly deeply important to us all.
